Paul Mockapetris

Biography


     Paul V. Mockapetris, born 1948 in Boston, Massachusetts, US is an American computer scientist and Internet pioneer, who, together with Jon Postel, invented the Internet Domain Name System (DNS). Mockapetris graduated from the prestigious Boston Latin School in 1966, received his bachelor's degrees in physics and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971 and his doctorate in information and computer science from the University of California at Irvine in 1982. In 1983, he proposed Domain Name System architecture in RFC 882and RFC 883. He had recognized the problem in the early Internet of holding name to address translations in a single table on a single host, and instead proposed a distributed and dynamic DNS database: essentially DNS as it exists today.

     Rather than simply looking up host names, DNS created easily identifiable names for IP addresses, making the Internet far more accessible for everyday use. After the formal creation of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1986, DNS became one of the original Internet Standards.

Career


     Throughout his career, Mockapetris has contributed significantly to the evolution of the Internet through both research and industry. His earliest work at UC Irvine on distributed systems and LAN technology preceded the commercial Ethernet and Token Ring designs. During the early 1990s, he served as program manager for networking at ARPA, supervising efforts such as gigabit and optical networking. He has also held leadership roles at several Silicon Valley networking startups, including @Home, Software.com, Fiberlane and Siara.
     When the internet was still the ARPAnet, the government-funded network that connected various research outfits across the country you couldn't get an address without the help of Elizabeth Feinler and the Stanford Research Institute's Network Information Center. And the NIC wasn't open around the clock.
     Mockapetris is the man who solved this problem. He invented the Domain Naming System, or DNS, which automated the management of internet names and addresses by spreading the duties among myriad servers setup across the network, and ultimately, it allowed the internet to operate without the NIC or any other single naming authority.
     Though the DNS has evolved significantly, the same basic system is still used today, and earlier this year, in recognition of his contribution, Mockapetris was inducted into the inaugural class of the Internet Society's (ISOC) Internet Hall of Fame, alongside such names as Vint Cerf, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Van Jacobson, and the woman who preceded him as the grand poobah of internet naming: Jake Feinler.
     One day, in 1983, Mockapetris was sitting in his office at USC when Jon Postel walked in. Postel has been a part of the research team at another Southern California university, the University of California, Los Angeles, that sent the world's first internet message, and by the early '80s, he had spent a decade overseeing the RFCs, or Request for Comments, he documents that defined how the internet was built.
     Postel walked in because he had a job for Mockapetris. He wanted him to find a compromise between five different proposals for improving the way the ARPAnet dealt with names and addresses. Mockapetris took the job, but he pretty much ignored the five proposals and built his own system. "I just went off and did my own thing," he says, "and they all thought I didn't use much of their stuff. But by the time, they figured it out, it was what it was." It was DNS.
     Previously, the NIC kept track of all the various ARPAnet addresses using a master file called host.text, and Feinler and her cohorts ran a set of central servers that made sure this file was distributed to all the other machines on the network. But with DNS, Mockapetris drew on work he'd done with distributed systems at MIT's Architecture Machine Group, the forerunner of the MIT Media Lab. The system was designed to spread naming duties across a larger number of servers that sat in disparate places across the network.
     It was a time when the entire network was morphing into something similar to the network we know today. The ARPAnet was moving to the TCP/IP protocol that still underpins the modern internet, and DNS was part of a larger overhaul of the way everything worked. The first DNS specification was finished in 1983. A revised version arrived three years later. And by that year, Mockapetris says, people were relying DNS without using the old master of list of names as a safety net.
     Today, the internet spans over 200 million domains, and DNS is still making sure everything can talk to everything else though tens of hundreds of people have worked to enhance the work originally done by Mockapetris. If you send an email, you expect the system to figure out how to get it to where it's going whichever one of the 200 million domains that might be and by and large, it all works.

Achievements


     Mockapetris is a member of the IEEE and the Association for Computing Machinery. He joined the Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California in 1978, where he developed the first SMTP email server, proposed the DNS architecture in 1983, wrote the first DNS implementation for the TOPS-20 in 1983, served as director of the high performance computing and communications division, was a program manager for networking at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense from 1990 to 1993 and served served as chair of the Research Working Group of the U.S. Federal Networking Council.
     He also served as chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force from 1994 to 1996 and a member of the Internet Architecture Board in 1994 and 1995 worked for several Internet-related companies: employee number two at @Home from 1995 to 1997, Software.com from1997 to 1998 , Fiberlane , Cerent/Siara from 1998 to 1999, Urban Media from 1999 to 2001, and NU Domain from 1999.
     In 1997, He received the John C. Dvorak Telecommunications Excellence Award "Personal Achievement-Network Engineering" for DNS design and implementation. In 2002, Distinguished Alumnus award from the University of California, Irvine. In 2003, he recieved IEEE Internet Award for his contributions to DNS. In 2005, ACM SIGCOMM Award for lifetime contribution to the field of communication networks was given to him in recognition of his foundational work in designing, developing and deploying the Domain Name System, and his sustained leadership in overall Internet architecture development. In 2006, ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Paper Award for co-authoring paper "Development of the Domain Name System". In 2012, he was inducted by the Internet Society into the Internet Hall of Fameas an innovator. In 2013,he was given a Honoris Causa by Miguel Hernández University.

     Paul Mockapetris is the great contributor that I have chosen for this research paper because his work made a big difference to the world of internet. He created the DNS and which allowed us to be able to know the domain names of the many different sites that helps us in many different ways. Mockapetris, as one of the fathers of the internet, is a great man that received many honours at which every people must be amazed because not everyone in the world except him have made a very big impact to the whole world.
